Omayra Amaya is a celebrated modern flamenco dancer and choreographer whose work blends deep Gypsy tradition with contemporary expression. The daughter of flamenco artists Olga and Curro Amaya and grandniece of the legendary Carmen Amaya, she began performing as a child, choreographed her first role at 12, and was touring internationally by 15.
A Boston Conservatory graduate, Omayra founded the Omayra Amaya Flamenco Dance Company in 1994 and launched a critically acclaimed nine-month residency at Boston Park Plaza that inspired a PBS documentary and the award-winning film Gypsy Heart. She has since performed worldwide—from Lincoln Center and flamenco festivals in Spain to sold-out tours across China—and appeared in The Pink Panther II alongside Steve Martin.
Her choreographic work has been featured in interdisciplinary projects, major collaborations, and civic recognitions, including a Miami proclamation of “Omayra Amaya Day.” Recent productions such as INTIMO, Ritmo del Tiempo, and Antes Del Fin continue her mission to evolve the art form while honoring her rich legacy.
Omayra Amaya founded the company in 1994 to preserve and evolve flamenco through performance, education, and outreach.
She has performed at major venues like Lincoln Center, the Joyce Theater, The Moss Center, and the Shanghai Theatre Centre.
Notable collaborations include work with the New York Philharmonic, the Albany Symphony Orchestra, and Franco Dragone.
Appearances include Pink Panther II (with Steve Martin), Gypsy Heart (PBS), Queen of the Gypsies, and Slow Dancing (Lincoln Center).
“Omayra Amaya is poly-rhythmic, poly-qualitative, poly-dimensional… I do know after this performance that I was in
the presence of greatness.”
“Mesmerizing… intense… even erotic… splendid.”
“It will only take you 30 seconds for Amaya to leave you breathless and speechless.”
“Each piece is like a Picasso painting… Amaya pushes flamenco beyond its limits.”
